About Us

Smart Premium Guide exists for one reason: health insurance shouldn’t feel like a foreign language.

Premiums, deductibles, coinsurance, out-of-pocket maximums, networks, formularies, enrollment windows — most people are expected to make a decision worth thousands of dollars a year using vocabulary nobody ever taught them. We started this site to fix that.

What we do

We publish clear, practical guides that explain how health coverage in the United States actually works and how to make smarter choices with it. Our content covers:

  • The basics — what every insurance term means, with real-number examples.
  • Choosing a plan — how to compare plan types, metal tiers and networks for your situation.
  • Specific life situations — freelancers, families, people retiring early, and anyone between jobs.
  • Saving money — subsidies, HSAs, FSAs and other legitimate ways to lower your costs.

What we are not

Smart Premium Guide is an independent educational publisher. We are not an insurance company, agent, broker or government agency, and we do not sell insurance. We are not affiliated with HealthCare.gov, Medicare, Medicaid or any state marketplace. Nothing on this site is personal financial, legal, tax or medical advice. For decisions about your own coverage, we always recommend checking official sources and, when needed, a licensed professional.

How we keep our content trustworthy

  • We base our guides on primary sources such as HealthCare.gov, CMS, the IRS and respected research organizations like KFF.
  • We include dates and numbers where they matter and review guides when rules or limits change.
  • We clearly label advertising and affiliate links. You can read more in our Editorial Policy and Affiliate Disclosure.

How this site is funded

Our guides are free to read. The site is supported by display advertising and, on some pages, affiliate links to products we think are genuinely useful. These never influence what we say about insurance rules or plan choices.
